Während der letzten fünfzig Jahre hat sich die Bedrohung aus der Luft drastisch geändert.
In the last fifty years, the threat from the air has changed drastically.
Zum Beispiel wurde 1967 zum ersten Mal ein Kriegsschiff von einer sogenannten Seezielrakete versenkt.
For example, a warship was sunk for the first time by a so-called sea target missile in 1967.
Dies geschah im Roten Meer, wo die Ägypter im 3. Nahost Krieg den israelischen Zerstörer Eilat mit einer Seezielrakete sowjetischen Fabrikats STYX versenkten.
This happened in the Red Sea, where the Egyptians sank the Israeli destroyer Eilat with a Soviet-made STYX sea target missile during the 3rd Middle East War.
Das Ende von maritimen Kanonenschlachten zwischen Schiffen hatte somit geschlagen.
This marked the end of gun battles between ships.
Der Krieg in der Ukraine hat den regen Einsatz von Cruise Missiles und Precision-Guided-Munition PGM aller Art, inklusive Drohnen (Air, Surface & Submarine) vorgeführt. Der Hauptgrund für diese Revolution liegt in der Mikrointegration der Elektronik. Die Sensoren und Prozessoren konnten demzufolge ebenfalls miniaturisiert werden.
The current war in Ukraine has demonstrated the prolific use of cruise missiles and precision guided munitions, PGMs, of all kinds, in the form of Air, Surface & Submarine drones. The main enabler of this revolution is the micro-integration of electronics which has allowed both sensors and processors to be miniaturised.

Anfang 1970 erkannte die WO (Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Oerlikon) diesen Trend. Dies provozierte mittelfristig ein entsprechendes Umdenken in der Munitionsentwicklung.
Early in 1970, the Oerlikon Machine Tool Works, (WO or Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Oerlikon) recognised this new trend which provoked a corresponding medium term rethink in ammunition development.
Die Problematik Seezielraketen-Abwehr stand im Vordergrund.
At the forefront was the problem of sea target missile defence.
Daraus entstand Anfang 1980er Jahre das System CIWS (Close-In-Weapon-System) 25 mm KBB (Sea-Zenith), ein Vierlings-Kanonen-System, das Raketen-Angriffe von horizontal bis vertikal bekämpfen kann. Unter den drei weltweit existierenden CIWS, Goalkeeper 30mm England, 25 mm Sea-Zenith (Schweiz-WO) und Phalanx 20 mm (USA), war das Sea-Zenith-System nach NATO-Vergleichsschiessen eindeutig Jahr für Jahr das absolut wirksamste System.
This led to the development of the CIWS (Close-In-Weapon-System) 25 mm KBB (Sea-Zenith) system at the beginning of the 1980s, a quadruple gun system capable of combating missile attacks from horizontal to vertical. Among the world's three existing CIWS, Goalkeeper 30mm (England), 25 mm Sea-Zenith (Switzerland-WO) and Phalanx 20 mm (USA), the Sea-Zenith system was clearly, year after year, the absolute most effective system, according to comparisons of NATO firing.
In der Doktrin der Attacke einer Seezielrakete bekämpft jedes Schiff seine eigenen angreifenden Raketen. Dies vereinfacht die Zielverfolgung wesentlich.
In the doctrine of attacking a sea target missile, each ship fights its own attacking missiles. This greatly simplifies target tracking. However, in a terrestrial defence, where the weapon is not actually on the target, predicting the intercept point for a set defensive trajectory in fire control terms, is much more difficult.
In einer terrestrischen Abwehr weiss man nicht im Voraus, wo das Ziel ist, was die «Prädiktion» in der Feuerleitung schwieriger macht.
However, in a terrestrial defence, where the weapon is not actually on the target, predicting the intercept point for a set defensive trajectory in fire control terms, is much more difficult.
Zudem wurde die Grösse dieser Ziele immer kleiner – bis zur Grösse einer Visitenkarte (z.B. Minenwerfermunition 81mm).
In addition to that, the size of these targets has become smaller and smaller - down to the size of a business card (e.g. mine launcher ammunition 81mm).
Es ist ersichtlich, dass nur eine entsprechende Kanonenmunition mit einem «Kadenzmultiplikator» überhaupt in der Lage ist, kleine, wendige Ziele erfolgreich zu bekämpfen.
It is then obvious that only appropriate cannon ammunition with a "cadence multiplier" is at all capable of successfully engaging small, manoeuvrable targets.
